Bioswales: Through Urban Resources Initiative (URI), a nonprofit connected to Yale School of the Environment, I spent a year helping to install bioswales in the field with community members and serving as the technical supervisor for construction. This consisted of digging, planting, and manual preparing construction of various elements. In order to complete this work, URI partners with another local nonprofit, EMERGE, which runs a program helping formerly incarcerated New Havenites reenter the workforce through developing professional, personal, and life skills. URI provides many jobs in the green construction industry and I had the opportunity to work alongside people in the program as well as get an inside look into how the program was developed and continues to grow.
Role: fieldwork digging, planting, giving on-site technical guidance, and preparing materials for construction.
